Marc Ribot

Marc Ribot (born 1954, Newark) is an American guitarist and composer whose work spans no wave, free jazz, rock and Cuban music. A member of the Lounge Lizards in the late 1980s and Tom Waits’s guitarist since Rain Dogs (1985), he has played on records by Elvis Costello, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and Caetano Veloso, and is a long-standing John Zorn collaborator. He leads Ceramic Dog, with Shahzad Ismaily and Ches Smith, and Los Cubanos Postizos; his albums include Silent Movies (2010), Songs of Resistance 1942–2018 and Map of a Blue City (2025).
I have been fortunate enough to explore these ideas with great improvisers, including Laurie Anderson, Moldover, John Zorn, Sxip Shirey, Marc Ribot and Rob Wasserman.

Noise Night, Sydney
At Vivid LIVE, the festival Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson curated at the Sydney Opera House, the night after Metal Machine Trio’s show was Noise Night, May 31, 2010: Zond, Melt-Banana, Bardo Pond with him as a guest, and a ten-piece collaboration led by Lou and Laurie with him on guitar and me on programming. My old site had a conspirator page for him with one post, “Photos of Noise Night, Sydney,” July 10, 2010; the post and its photos did not survive the site. I have named him among the improvisers I explored the Introspections ideas with.
